Outdoor Leader Development

 


Overview

Outdoor Excursions is committed to developing quality Outdoor Leaders with the skills and experience needed to effectively lead others in outdoor adventure activities. Outdoor Excursions’ Leader Development Program is designed to introduce adventure lovers to these basic skills. This program is a requirement for anyone interested in becoming a leader for Outdoor Excursions. To graduate from the Leader Development Program, you will complete the following: a 6 Day Leadership Expedition, wilderness first aid training, obtain a class B commercial driver’s license, and shadow two Outdoor Excursions trips. Upon completion of the program you will receive a certificate, an evaluation of your skills and feedback on how to further your development. The graduates with the most rounded skill sets will be offered a job as an Outdoor Excursions Trip Leader.


 

Informational Session

This is your chance to learn more about the Leader Development Program and how to begin the process of training as an Outdoor Excursions Trip Leader candidate. We will discuss the process for completion, upcoming training dates, and the many benefits of becoming an Outdoor Excursions Trip Leader.

Dates:

Tuesday, October 7,  6:00-7:00pm SRC Conference Room

First Aid/CPR Certification

Take this 6 hour course offered through the Student Recreation Center. It is usually offered 2-3 times per quarter. The course is $55, however if you become hired as a Trip Leader, you will be reimbursed for this expense.

Fall 2008 Dates:

Sat. Oct 18th 9:30am - 2:30 pm

Sat. Nov 8th 9:30am - 2:30 pm.

 

Class B Commercial Drivers License

The Class B is a two part process. First, you must complete a medical examination and written test to obtain the permit. Second, you must complete a behind-the-wheel exam to obtain the license. You must hold a permit to shadow OE Trips, and you must hold a license before you schedule an evaluation. You will be reimbursed for the cost (up to $104) of obtaining the license if you are hired.

Shadow 2 Outdoor Excursions Trips

You must shadow the leaders on two Outdoor Excursions trips to learn how our trips operate. During the trips you will assist and learn from the Trip Leaders. You must signup with the Outdoor Excursions Manager to shadow trips. As a shadow you get to go on the trip for free.

Wilderness First Aid Certification

Take this 16 hour weekend course after you have completed the CPR/First Aid class. This course will be offered twice per academic year and is offered for $55 through Outdoor Excursions.

Leader Expedition

This 6 day learning-intensive adventure is designed as an experiential training that will improve your knowledge of outdoor skills, interpersonal skills and teaching skills. During our overnight excursion we will focus on equipment selection, map and compass skills, travel methods, “Leave No Trace Ethics,” teaching techniques, group dynamics and other basic outdoor leadership skills. The cost is shared between all registered participants (usually around $50).

Expedition: March 23-28

Evaluation

After the completion of all the above requirements you must schedule an interview with the Outdoor Excursions professional staff. During the interview we will discuss your performance on the Leader Expedition and provide you with feedback on how to further your development. After your interview you will be contacted with our hiring decision.

Orientation

Once you are hired you will be required to make an appointment to complete a two hour Trip Leader Orientation. During the orientation you will complete all hiring paperwork, and learn our procedures to plan, lead, and administer Outdoor Excursions trips.
